Unit 9: Energy Movement (Waves)
Key Learning Targets
What Essential Questions will be considered? ● How is sound energy converted to electrical energy? ● How are electromagnetic waves transmitted and used to send information? ● How are fiber optic cables used to transmit information? Student will know: (Facts) ● Sound is a mechanical wave ● Analog refers to describing a wave with a gradually changing amplitude (i.e. a sine wave) ● Digital refers to describing a wave in discrete chunks with numbers that describe some aspect of those discrete chunks. ● AM refers to amplitude modulation and FM refers to frequency modulation of radio waves. Students will UNDERSTAND: (Big Ideas) ● Information can be transmitted in both an analog and digital manner; there are advantages and disadvantages to each. ● Electromagnetic radiation is created by vibrating electrons. ● Technical devices use wave properties to transmit information. Student will be able to: (Do/Skills) ● Calculate wavelength, frequency, and speed of a wave ● Model the phenomena of cell phone communication ● Communicate technical information about devices Additional Assistance Physics Classroom Help (we won't really use much if any of these materials in class) Waves (start at Lesson 1) Simple Wave Simulator Worksheet help: "Describing Waves" worksheet The Anatomy of a Wave Frequency and Period Energy transport and Amplitude The Speed of a Wave The wave equation "Wave Speed" worksheet The Speed of a Wave The wave equation |
